We currently offer all valid registered users of AB Tutor Control free upgrades to version 4 and 5. If you are currently running version 3.x, please follow the steps below to upgrade your installation.
1. Check that you have an Internet Connection and that you have not blocked AB Tutor Control from accessing that connection (with, for example, a firewall).
2. Launch your version 3.x installation of AB Tutor Control.
You will only be able to upgrade from installations that have been activated with unlock codes. If you are running a trial version of AB Tutor Control version 3, you will not be able to upgrade.
3. On the menu bar, select the 'Tools' menu, followed by 'Check for Updates'.
4. If a newer version is found, you will a dialog box similar to that below:

5. Click on 'Yes' to download and install the latest version of AB Tutor Control. The tutor program will now connect to the Licence Management System, and if the id/unlock code of your installation is found, the software will automatically upgrade and be registered under your account in the LMS.
If you receive a message to say that you are running the latest version of AB Tutor Control, when you know for sure that this is not the case, it is either because you are running a proxy server or have blocked AB Tutor Control from communicating with the Licence Management System over the Internet - see 'Troubleshooting Upgrades' below.
6. Now launch the upgraded version of the AB Tutor Control program. Find and connect to ALL your client workstations.
7. Select the 'Tools' menu followed by 'Client Maintenance'.
8. Select the option 'Check for Older Client Programs' and click on the OK button. If the system detects any older remote clients, a dialog box will be displayed.
9. In this box, select the workstations to update and click on the 'Update Now' button.
10. If for any reason some of the clients fail to update, you will need to manually install the relevant version of the client software on those machines.
Troubleshooting Upgrades
Proxy Servers
The most likely reason for problems using the built-in software update function is connecting to the Internet through a proxy server. If this is the case, you will need to follow the steps below:
1. Download the latest AB Tutor Control version 4 or version 5 by logging onto your account in the Licence Management System and clicking on the ‘Download’ button.
2. Install version 4 or 5 over the top of your version 3 installation by double-clicking the 'abtcsetup.msi' file.
3. When you launch version 4 or 5, it will attempt to connect to the Internet to verify its licence; depending on various security restrictions, this may fail because you use a proxy server. If so, please continue to 4. below.
4. Select 'Help' - 'Licence Activation'
5. Enter your Account Serial Number. You can always find your Account Serial Number by logging onto your account in the Licence Management System - see How do I get an account in the Licence Management System?
6. Press Activate, again.
7. If you now get another failure message as it tries to connect, you need to set up your proxy server. You will see a 'Setup' button displayed.
7. Press this button and configure your Proxy Server - you may find our knowledgebase item How can I configure AB Tutor Control to run through our proxy server? helpful.
8. Press Activate once again. This should now connect OK and activate your licence.
Problems locating the identity code of your installation in the Licence Management System
The message : "Sorry but we are unable to verify your Identity Code. Please e-mail register@abconsulting.com with the following details and we will activate your licence as soon as possible." will occur when the system cannot find the identity code for your installation in your account. In this case, you will need to email us directly for assistance.
Similarly, the message: "Sorry, but there appears to be a problem with your licence" will occur if you are trying to upgrade from an identity code or serial number which has been marked as obsolete. Again, you will need to email us directly for assistance.
Problems connecting to the Licence Management System
If you are not running a proxy server and still cannot upgrade AB Tutor Control automatically, you are probably blocking AB Tutor Control from connecting to the licence management system over the Internet.
Please check that:
- you have a connection to the Internet - no firewall or filtering software or other security restriction/policy is preventing AB Tutor Control from connecting to www.abtutorcontrol.com via port 80 (or your specific proxy port).
