I never set any connection passwords at all, so how is it possible that there should be password problems

If you have not set any connection passwords, anyone who has managed to get access to a copy of AB Tutor, may have connected to all your unprotected clients and changed the connection password themselves, thus preventing you from connecting to your own machines. 

 For this reason you really must set connection passwords as soon as possible after installing AB Tutor.
