Microsoft Windows XP ships with a built-in firewall that protects your computer against unauthorised programs accessing the network or Internet. AB Tutor is a program that uses your network to connect to other computers and so will be blocked by the firewall.
To fix this, we need to alter the Firewall so that it specifically allows AB Tutor to run through the firewall. The AB Tutor installation program attempts to configure the firewall at the point of installation. Sometimes, however, this can fail because of local security settings.
If this happens, you need to manually configure your clients' XP firewalls.
The following steps guide you through the process of setting up the firewall to allow AB Tutor to use the network. This must be done on each student (or client) computer. It is not necessary to do this for the main teacher machines.
1. Logon to the student workstation with Administrator access rights
2. Click on the Start button and select Settings - Control Panel
3. Find the icon Windows Firewall and double-click it to open
4. This will open the actual firewall setup window and contains 3 tabs: General, Exception and Advanced. Click the Exceptions tab.
5. Click the first button, Add Program…
6. Click on the Browse button and browse to the folder where the ABClient.exe file is located (This will be the in your chosen installation folder, the default being C:\Program Files\ABControl).

7. Select the ABClient.exe file and press Open
8. Press OK and check that the ABClient Application has been added to the list and is ticked.

9. Click on OK to apply the changes and close the Firewall Configuration Panel.
