We are encountering problems wih two suites of 30 computers where some of the machines are 'faltering' with jerky cursor movement and delayed response to the user input. Task manager shows ABClient.exe using as much as 75%+ of CPU usage - adjacent machines with similar/identical hardware show 0% CPU usage. This is causing serious difficulties in the classroom and we are now considering removal of this otherwise valuable software.
Any ideas please? |

Hi all,
Our site which is trialling the version 4 beta is experiencing the same problem in one of our suites of computers (30 cloned units). Another room of 30 cloned machines of almost identical spec (both slightly varying Shuttle XPC's) is working correctly, showing a peak of 20% cpu usage when monitored/remotely-controlled. When we connect to any machine in the troublesome suite, cpu usage can spike and hit a full 100% causing machine slowdown and obviously stuttery performance (on the actual pc as well as remotely viewed). Both banks of machines are Win XP with comparable AMD Sempron 2800 cpu's, 512mb ram, latest windows updates etc. I think graphics drivers are reasonably up-to-date and all directx/hardware acceleration on the graphics card are enabled (and tried adjusting). Other software on the machine is comparable between the two rooms as they used for the same purposes.
Interestingly, monitoring the spiked cpu behaviour you can see a noticeable jump in cpu usage by merely waving the mouse cursor across the screen, and as it passes over some 'edges' of GUI windows and buttons it causes massive spikes in the abclient.exe process and stutters the local machine. Moving the curosr around over a blank desktop causes little to no spiking problems. This seemed to suggest to me an internal problem with the ABClient and its compression of what is onscreen, or something such as graphics acceleration / driver compatibility with the app etc?
I have reinstalled the version 4 beta again manually (after previously MSI deploying it), and ensured the 'mirror driver' was installed, but again exactly the same issues.
At the moment the machines in this one suite are unusable in this state if using ABTutor, and being on the verge of placing an order as a result of experiencing this excellent (and bargain) application, I would be very interested to hear of any feedback on this issue.
Regards,
Nick (Hagley Catholic High School). |
