Does anyone know if the log files are self-purging after a week, and how large they tend to get?

Yes, the current version 4.5 will automatically purge log files older than 7 days. In version 5, this has been extended to 31 days.
The size of log files really depends on the amount of activity. If you are logging web sites, and the web is being browse all day, then I guess the log files can get quite large. This is something you will have to monitor yourself.

Please upgrade to version 5.3 to fix and clear this large log file.
